EDAR U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services Wellness Conference

Wednesday, December 14, 2022

On September 30, 2022, the U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services for the Eastern District of Arkansas (EDAR) participated in wellness training with Derek Deprey. EDAR Wellness committee members heard Mr. Deprey speak at the U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services National Wellness Conference in Atlanta, Georgia earlier in the year. The team felt the office would benefit from his knowledge on basic but critical aspects of wellness.

The training, titled “Live Well, Lead Well: Five Practices to Feel Better in Work and Life” focused on sleep, stress, food, exercise, and water intake. Mr. Deprey’s message was practical and discussed small changes that can improve overall wellness.  He discussed taking time to recharge and recover from stress while taking responsibility for your wellness. He stated sleep was important and gave everyday tips on improving the length and quality of sleep. Mr. Deprey discussed how a drastic change in diet and exercise regimen is not generally sustainable, but a simple commitment to take a ten minute walk every day can improve your quality of life. Mr. Deprey explained the importance of setting a daily goal. For example, reminders to drink water or eat foods with high water content can have a lasting impact and result in more healthy choices.

The topic of officer wellness is a widespread concern within the Probation and Pretrial Services community. This training gave all staff in the Eastern District of Arkansas strategies to help improve their wellness.
